August Recalls: Bad Ideas Gone Bad

Now that August is in full sway, it’s the perfect time to check in with The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) list of products voluntarily recalled by their manufacturers. Each month the CPSC website offers updates on the latest recalls and has a search-able index by product type or date of recall.
For people with children, the CPSC also has an interactive feature page of tips and games called the Further Adventures of Kidd Safety. I tried the interactive features without hurting myself. Did you know that 300 children a week visit emergency rooms with skateboard-related injuries?
OK, on to the recalls:
Husqvarna has recalled about 1,700 of its Model GTH27V52LS riding lawn tractors after receiving 53 reports of damage to the fuel line. The hazard, according to the CPSC, is the overly long fuel line on the $3,000 mower that can get tangled and create a fire hazard.
About 1,900 Belle Vanity Benches, imported by LaMont Limited, of Burlington, Iowa, have been voluntarily recalled after the company received complaints that the legs detached at the weld, causing people to fall on their………..vanity.
Beyond the Pale

Bed Bath & Beyond has recalled 7,600 units of Solar Lighted Cantilever Umbrellas that reportedly can collapse down on green consumers. The company has received 21 reports of the 13-foot, solar-powered umbrella toppling, leaving some consumers with a “bruise, abrasion, and nausea.” I guess that’s the “beyond” part.
Sorry to leave you with this one. But voluntary recalls are not always a laughing matter. After one reported infant death, Baby Matters recalled its Nap Nanny Recliners. The company received complaints that more than 22 infants under 5-months-old were found “hanging or falling out over the side” despite that they were fitted securely in the recliner harness.

Bunch of drapes got recalled too because the ropes to pull them down were causing kids to strangle themselves…Never really thought about it, needless to say that company is having a rough year on the balance sheets.
Do we really need these products? I think there should be a recall of 90% of the junk on the market. Unfettered markets should not mean mountains of crap!
