Carpet Diem

In the 1980s I moved to a beach house in Santa Cruz, CA. The carpets seemed really ugly, but I loved the location and was pretty sure I could tolerate the black speckled design. That was until after I completed the move and lay down on the rug for a nap, only to discover that the tiny dots in the white shag were fleas!  The previous owners had moved out, along with Perky the dog, and the fleas were ravenous!

A visit from pest control soon had the rug tamed, but it was still a disturbing sight. There are worse things than an ugly carpet, I suppose. You decide:

Christopher Cat, according to the Dainty Digs blog, was having such a dismal time navigating the carpeting that the Kelly household performed a makeover to save his remaining lives.

Now you’re talking, uh, writing! Woodrow, you’ve nailed yet another topic. Collegiate environments abound with tales of tasteless tufts of rayon. My favorites were the burnt-orange with lime-green stripes in the dorms, and the ivory white shag carpet for the 2-bedroom, 2-story condo me and 3 other guys shared back in the 70’s. Conducive to great bouts of rolling-on-the-floor laughter (and other events among those in the free-love spirit), the long white shag was also susceptible to permanent discoloration and stains from various liquids, solids and (alas) even ashes.

In particular, the bottle bong water which lasted 2 years, fell silently in the corner one hazy night, resulting in not only permanent inky blackness, but also a non-melodious air which clearly defined our castle as a den of dung. Kissed that rent deposit goodbye, for sure…..

Old carpet is not only ugly, it is unhealthy. Between the chemicals and the dust mites, I’d rather have wood floors!

Would that carpet at the university look straight to you after you have been drinking? Kind of fitting for carpet like that to be at a university. That poor cat is just as confused and disgusted by such ugly tile as the person taking the picture.

  • Kid's stuff:Bedroom furniture for dreamers

    Hey Woodrow,

You've put together a great post here. Hardwearing and long-lasting bedroom furniture is so important when you have young children, and choosing pieces which can handle the rough-and-tumble that comes with having little ones is key!

    Best wishes, Alex.

  • Awesomely Oddball Lawn and Garden Accessories

I plan to do this. What was your process in painting the bottom...outside portion of the tub?

  • Poor staging can crush your home sale

Woodrow, you have once again 'nailed' the essence of the issue of staging your home for sale with easy to understand pics and words. These are definitely rules to live by, oh wise one! I know I"m soaking up the knowledge you share--- now excuse me while I wring myself out. Can't wait for the next issue.

  • To everyone, a room of one's own

We've recently bought a house which needs A LOT of work and I'm trying to convince my other half to let me build a "room of my own" for the house, one where I can put my games console and beer fridge. She's not gone for it yet though. The most I've managed to get is an office I can work out of ... not quite the same ... LoL.

Mine would certainly be like the car boot room in the first image :)

  • Home designs you haven’t seen before

I wonder how far the folks in the Rock House are able to drive in their car? Maybe down to their boat? It's so true that home is where you are at the moment.
