I’m Not Above Living in a Treehouse

Treehouses are no longer for the birds. Even better than sleeping in a lofty perch above the din of traffic and pulsing sub-woofers is the chance to sleep in near invisibility to the human race. For those of us who grew up pining for a room at the Swiss Family Robinson tree house, there’s hope.
Mirror, Mirror
Not only will you be above it all—which in Sweden’s TreeHotel means above bears and wolves—you’ll sleep in a room visible only to birds. That’s because creator Kent Lindvall coated the cube with a reflective film to prevent winged beasts from crashing the party. Some 40 miles from the Arctic Circle, the hotel charges about $100 a night for two. The area is home to a scant 600 residents, spread out across the expanse of trees, water, and wildlife. Make your reservation at the TreeHotel.
Big Is Best
A hundred feet above the land in Crossville, Tennessee, Horrace Burges built this 10,000-square-foot, 10-story “tree mansion”. He reports that the biggest cost was for buying nails. The eco-minded builder used salvaged or donated lumber to complete the $12,000 project. That’s one, strong tree.
It’s the High Life
It looks like a long-lost NASA probe, but a double bed, table and counter, and porthole embrace this home where no peddler will come and try to sell you a magazine or vacuum cleaner. Vancouver architect Tom Chud built this dangling abode out of fiberglass and laminated wood. Let the wind rock you to sleep.
Planks for the Memories
The Cedar Creek Tree House in Washington State is an eco-minded getaway in the rain forest canopy near Mount Rainier. Take the rainbow bridge from your lodgings to the observatory, 100 feet above the evergreen forest floor.
Have a favorite? I’d pick Sweden.

I have seen a few builders and architects who focus solely on treehouses these days. If you are interested in checking out some more great treehouse get the book “The TreeHouse Book” by Peter and Judy Nelson.
