Vinyl Wall Decals: Like a Sticker Book, But Bigger

For some of us, when we see brightly colored bits of paper with adhesive affixed to one side, we just can’t help ourselves… we need to stick them anywhere we possibly can. I get it. I’m the child that sat stoically in the doctors chair awaiting the prick of a booster shot, bribed into submission with the promise of a new sticker for my sticker book.

So I’m saying, some of these big vinyl wall decals make me swoon.

80″ Tree decal from WilsonGraphics? Be still my heart.

Or this urban skyline?

I’ve got to tell you, I’m fighting back those peel-and-stick urges, but this hamster treadmill from HU2 Design is making it hard.

However, like bright orange exterior house paint, big stickers are one of those items that should be used sparingly when it comes to home decor. And probably only by professionals.

But if you just have to do it– if your life is suddenly devoid of meaning because there are all those stickers out there with nothing to be stuck on– there are two things to keep in mind.

  1. What it is
  2. Where you’re sticking it

You would think the first one would be fairly obvious, and yet it’s shocking how often an unusually large wolf head will end up in someone’s living room.

And let’s just make a rule right now that says disembodied Robert Pattinson heads should never be hung on the wall. Ever.

But even if you have a really good design, placement can make all of the difference.

I’ve got nothing against a good cherry blossom, but I look at this and I keep getting worried that the fabric of space-time has been ripped, resulting in a mysteriously missing tree… its two forlorn limbs left behind.

And, I swore this post wasn’t going to degenerate into fifth-grade humor, but seriously…

…do you not get the distinct impression that this couch just farted?

Where do you go to get the designs for vinyl wall decals? Or do you just make them yourself? Thanks!

  • Kid's stuff:Bedroom furniture for dreamers

    Hey Woodrow,

You've put together a great post here. Hardwearing and long-lasting bedroom furniture is so important when you have young children, and choosing pieces which can handle the rough-and-tumble that comes with having little ones is key!

    Best wishes, Alex.

  • Awesomely Oddball Lawn and Garden Accessories

I plan to do this. What was your process in painting the bottom...outside portion of the tub?

  • Poor staging can crush your home sale

Woodrow, you have once again 'nailed' the essence of the issue of staging your home for sale with easy to understand pics and words. These are definitely rules to live by, oh wise one! I know I"m soaking up the knowledge you share--- now excuse me while I wring myself out. Can't wait for the next issue.

  • To everyone, a room of one's own

We've recently bought a house which needs A LOT of work and I'm trying to convince my other half to let me build a "room of my own" for the house, one where I can put my games console and beer fridge. She's not gone for it yet though. The most I've managed to get is an office I can work out of ... not quite the same ... LoL.

Mine would certainly be like the car boot room in the first image :)

  • Home designs you haven’t seen before

I wonder how far the folks in the Rock House are able to drive in their car? Maybe down to their boat? It's so true that home is where you are at the moment.
